F-1 students are exempted from SS/FICA taxes because they are also exempted from it's benefits.

You should be able to find some info on www.irs.gov just do a search... However, F1 students who have been in the US for more than 5 years are "residents" for tax purposes and have to pay FICA taxes...

Those who are not eligible to receive social security and medicare benefits are not subject to FICA and Social Security withholdings. F1students are one of them. As soon as you change to H1B, you are subject to both of these withholdings. Let your employer know if they haven't already taken out. DP
