I am travelling to Nepal in 1 months and I have transit of 3:30hrs in Guangzhou,China. Do I need transit visa? let me know guys.

My brother was traveling through China last month and he did not have transit visa beforehand. However, he said they gave him transit visa or documents of some sort that allowed him stay there for 48 hrs or so. BTW, he had approx. 9 hrs transit.
